There are some lovely towns that can be visited from here: Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Orvieto, Florence and Arezzo Nearby there are many interesting and characteristic villages: Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Colle Val d'Elsa, Volterra and many other villages to the south of Siena such as Celle sul Rigo, San Casciano dei Bagni, San Quirico d'Orcia, Radicofani, and Abbadia San Salvatore. And finally there's Siena itself, with its medieval centre, its Duomo, its numerous small streets and its famous town square, the Piazza del Campo. On the second of July and on the sixteenth of August the famous Palio is held, a horserace between the town districts of Siena.
